摘要

Diabetes surveillance for children and adolescents in Germany is based on regionally collected register data and data from the Diabetes-Patienten-Verlaufsdokumentation (DPV). The largest regional incidence register in Germany is the North Rhine–Westphalian Diabetes Register maintained by the German Diabetes Center, Düsseldorf. Based on many years of continuous data collection, the incidence and prevalence trends of the last two decades are available. The incidence of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents under the age of 18 has risen by an average of 2–3% annually to 33.0 per 100,000 person–years in 2022. The increase in type 2 diabetes was higher at around 7% per year. In 2022, the Germany-wide type 2 diabetes incidence in 11–17 year olds was 4.6 per 100,000 person–years. However, the trends in both incidence rates were not uniform over time. During the COVID-19 pandemic year 2021, more children and adolescents were newly diagnosed with diabetes than ever before: 5020 children and adolescents younger than 18 years with type 1 diabetes and 337 11– 17 year olds with type 2 diabetes across Germany. In 2022 (as of 6/2024), more than 34,500 children and adolescents under the age of 18 years in Germany had type 1 diabetes (244.7 per 100,000 people) and almost 1000 children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes were registered (18.9 per 100,000 people). Even if the incidence rates fluctuate in the short term, it is to be expected that the incidence and prevalence will increase in the coming years and, thus, the overall need for care for children and adolescents with diabetes will continue to rise.
