Automatische Insulindosierung (AID)

The commercialisation and clinical availability of automated insulin delivery (AID) systems represents a new era in the management of type 1 diabetes. Results from long-term randomised controlled trials show that AID therapy improves outcomes across the paediatric age-spectrum without increasing time in hypoglycaemia or leading to higher rates of acute complications. These results are replicated in real-world prospective observational studies as well in retrospective studies using manufacturers’ cloud data. Long-term real-world studies are lacking, and registry data should be utilised to explore whether the observed improvements in glycaemic outcomes are long-lasting in this age-group. A fully automated AID system where preprandial bolusing is not required remains the ultimate goal; however such systems are presently not available and study data in the paediatric population are lacking.
