Digitalization continues to advance. In general life, we are in the midst of a transition away from familiar tools such as file folders, faxes, and pencils—hard disks, emails, tablets, and digital pens are taking over. This transition also applies to medicine, so what about technical devices, automated insulin delivery systems (AIDs), and other digital tools in diabetology practices? Research and guidance are scare, so this article presents a practical perspective.

The aim of this article is to assess the current state of digitalization in diabetology practices based on surveys and personal interviews as well as the authors’ own evaluations. In addition to the status of digitalization in diabetology practices, the question arises as to what actually constitutes digitalization.

Digitalization is changing the processes and possibilities in diabetology practices. Due to the obvious benefits, general changes in society, and patient expectations, digitalization is in full swing.
