Materials and methodsNovel classification methods of (pre)diabetes for insulin secretion and clearance categorization are presented. Methods for determining insulin secretion and clearance are also described.
ResultsThe classification of prediabetes, type 1 and type 2 diabetes into subgroups based on simple clinical characteristics allows the identification of clusters with different insulin secretion. There are several methods to measure insulin secretion and clearance directly or indirectly. The severe autoimmune diabetes and severe insulin-deficient diabetes clusters showed the highest impairment of beta cell function and require insulin therapy more frequently than other diabetes subgroups.
ConclusionNew approaches that consider clinical, biochemical, and genetic characteristics can contribute to a more precise diagnosis and risk assessment as well as targeted prevention and therapy.
