Overweight and obesity in children are growing problems worldwide. In Germany, it affects approximately 15% of children and adolescents, with the prevalence remaining stable but the severity increasing. Diagnosis is based on age- and gender-specific percentiles of body mass index (BMI). The development of obesity and its risk factors are diverse, ranging from genetic predisposition to various environmental factors. Accordingly, the medical history should be comprehensive, while diagnostics should be more cautious and targeted. Given the significant relevance of subsequent illnesses that can begin in adolescence and exacerbate in adulthood, early therapy is essential. It includes the same pillars as in adulthood but is much more limited due to limited evidence.
