Erstdiagnose Diabetes mellitus nach Verletzung durch Seeigelstachel

“Diabetic holiday foot syndrome” describes foot injuries suffered by people with known diabetes mellitus while on vacation. The main causes are unusually extensive strain on the feet or wearing unsuitable footwear, as well as burns to the sole of the foot and acute trauma as a result of walking barefoot. We report on a patient with acute diabetic foot syndrome who sustained a foot injury from sea urchin spines during a beach vacation. This resulted in forefoot amputation. The patient’s diabetes mellitus, which was decompensated at the time, had not been previously known. Our case report highlights that the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Germany is presumably higher than assumed.
