<p>This essay presents eight lessons on teaching the origin of life, synthesized from my reflections as a biology teacher. The lessons cover the following themes: (1) recognizing one’s own position as a biology teacher; (2) openness to controversies; (3) rejecting activism; (4) different scientific theories on the origin of life; (5) the importance of contributions from various disciplines; (6) consulting primary sources; (7) questions about the behind-the-scenes of science; and (8) adopting a questioning attitude. As a controversial topic, often formally or informally banned in schools across many countries, the origin of life presents an excellent opportunity to apply dialogical and culturally responsive teaching strategies. These strategies allow for dialogue with multiple perspectives while maintaining the secular nature expected in biology classes. It is in this sense that the lessons analyzed seek to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing debate.</p>
