<p>The present paper challenges a dogma in the philosophy of race, according to which racism is not only wrong but wrong <i>by definition</i>. After distinguishing this view from three claims in the vicinity, I discuss three arguments for it and find them wanting. Then I put forward two arguments against it. The view that racism is unjustified as a matter of definition can accommodate neither the existence of conceptually competent proud racists nor the possibility of racism in a world without values. That racism is wrong is a substantive moral fact, not a conceptual truth.</p>
