<p>We develop a general evolutionary framework for describing the dynamics of cooperation within and between two distinct groups. The model is based on the replicator dynamics of the prisoner’s dilemma and stag hunt games. An illustrative case study is used to demonstrate the applicability of this framework: the case of cooperation between residents of a host country and refugees. We adopt suitable empirical values derived from experimental data for relatedness and initial cooperation levels. Results indicate that positive social ties, decision situations, and intergroup contact significantly influence the evolution of cooperation in heterogeneous groups and may facilitate cooperative behavior across group boundaries.</p>
