摘要

The term polyps of the gastrointestinal tract encompasses a variety of epithelial and nonepithelial tumors and tumor-like alterations. A general distinction is made between reactive inflammatory changes and neoplastic lesions. The most frequent polyps are epithelial lesions. Reactive inflammatory changes and hyperplastic polyps predominate in the upper gastrointestinal tract, while neoplastic polyps, such as adenomas occur more frequently in the colorectum. In addition to true neoplasms such as adenomas, nonneoplastic polyps such as hyperplastic gastric polyps can also be associated with an increased malignant potential. The malignant potential of a polyp is determined by its histological type. In the case of a neoplasm, the histomorphological subtype, the degree of dysplasia and the size of the lesion define its malignant potential.
