Purpose <p>Impacts of underground natural gas pipeline construction on soil properties can persist for several years after reclamation of the rights-of-way (ROW). However, our understanding of the diversity and composition of soil microbial communities on reclaimed underground natural gas pipeline ROWs on cropland remains fragmented. This study examined the diversity and composition of soil bacterial and fungal communities on reclaimed natural gas pipeline ROWs with increasing time post-reclamation.</p> Methods <p>Soil samples (0–15&#xa0;cm layer) were collected in late summer of 2021 from reclaimed ROWs with time after reclamation ranging from 4 to 12&#xa0;year and from adjacent undisturbed locations (off-ROW) at three sites in northeastern British Columbia. Metagenomic analyses of the bacterial 16&#xa0;S ribosomal RNA gene and the fungal Internal Transcribed Spacer region were performed.</p> Results <p>The diversity of bacterial and fungal communities was lower on the 5- and 6-yr ROWs than on off-ROWs. Relative abundance of some bacterial and fungal phyla were significantly different between reclaimed ROWs and the off-ROWs. Microbial communities on ROWs converged toward the off-ROW over time. A greater number of unique bacterial and fungal species were identified on off-ROWs than on reclaimed ROWs.</p> Conclusion <p>These findings suggest that the construction and operation of underground natural gas pipelines can cause significant shifts in soil microbial communities, with the communities converging towards the off-ROW over time. This study enhances our understanding of microbial community dynamics in soils underlain by natural gas pipelines and will contribute towards the formulation of sustainable management strategies for reclaimed ROWs on cropland.</p>
