Empowering entrepreneurs: the impact of digital technology innovation on overcoming managerial myopia in Chinese enterprises
摘要
The burgeoning digital landscape has emerged as a pivotal catalyst for China’s economic expansion. In the context of rapid digital transformation, this study delves into the nexus between digital technology innovation and managerial myopia within Chinese listed companies from 2010 to 2022. Managerial myopia, characterized by an undue focus on short-term gains, poses a significant impediment to the sustainable growth of enterprises. By using the International Patent Classification (IPC) to identify digital technology patents, the study constructs a measure of digital technology innovation to scrutinize the mitigating effect of digital technology innovation on managerial myopia. The empirical analysis reveals that digital technology innovation significantly ameliorates managerial myopia, primarily by reducing the pressure of business operations and enhancing the importance of innovation within the company. Furthermore, the role of digital technology innovation is particularly pronounced in the digital economy industry and enterprises in recession. Enterprises led by executives with non-financial and international educational backgrounds exhibit a more substantial reduction in managerial myopia following digital technology innovation. The findings of this paper underscore the strategic importance of bolstering digital innovation capabilities and enhancing managerial foresight for the sustainable development of enterprises. This research provides novel insights into the role of digital technology innovation in shaping managerial perspectives and offers actionable implications for corporate governance and policy formulation.
