Experimental comparison of CO2-assisted and conventional downdraft biomass gasification of corn cob and pine wood
摘要
This research aims to assess and compare the corn cob and pine wood gasification performance by applying conventional (air) and CO2-assisted gasification (air/CO2 mixture) considering technical and environmental aspects. Experimental assays were conducted in an auto thermal downdraft gasifier varying the CO2 concentration in the inlet flow from 0 to 30 vol. %. The results indicated that the CO concentration in the producer gas produced was higher compared to that obtained by using air solely, resulting in a higher heating value. Nonetheless, a decrease in the average temperature inside the gasifier was observed when the CO2 concentration in the gasifying agent increased. The cold gas efficiency, carbon conversion efficiency, and producer gas yield indicators were improved by more than 5%, 12%, and 15%, respectively, when using CO2-assisted gasification. The carbon footprint was reduced by 22% when using CO2. Moreover, CO2-assisted gasification highlighted as a promising process that contributes to carbon neutrality due to lower amounts of CO2 in the outflow streams since biochar acted as a CO2 adsorbent agent. Hence, the use of CO2 as a co-gasification agent offers technical advantages, increasing the efficiency of the process, and environmental benefits, in terms of greenhouse gas mitigation.
