Utilization of duckweed in phytomining of gold mine tailing and its potential to produce gold nanoparticle

Gold mine tailing is a waste product from gold mining activity that contains heavy metals but still contains small amounts of gold. Duckweeds (Lemna aequinoctialis) have been known to have ability to accumulate metals from its growing medium so that it can be used for phytoremediation and phytomining programs. This experiment aimed to observe the ability of duckweed to accumulate gold from gold mine tailings and its potential to produce gold nanoparticles. The research was carried out in a greenhouse using plastic container contained Hoagland’s solution as a basic media. Duckweed was exposed to one of the treatments media containing 100, 250, and 500 g of gold mine tailing that had been suspended with aqua regia, and one treatment that was used as a positive control was 0.7 mM of Gold (III) chloride solution (HAuCl4), while only Hogland’s solution was used as a negative control. After 7 days, duckweeds were harvested for gold content measurement, nanoparticle extraction, and nanoparticle characterization. The result showed that duckweed underwent chlorosis due to heavy metal stress in line with the increase of tailing content. Gold content of duckweed treated with tailing increased in line with the tailings content up to 250 g, but there was no further increase at 500 g. Duckweed treated with HAuCl4 turned to purple and accumulated large amounts of gold. Gold nanoparticles extracted from duckweed grown in positive control were confirmed based on the localized surface plasmon resonance phenomenon (LSPR) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) measurement with the shape of a sphere and the average size of 20.3 ± 8.6 nm.
