Salvage logging after landslide changes habitat use of medium-sized mammals

Due to climate change, the frequency and extent of natural disturbances in forest landscapes—such as wildfires, windstorms, landslides, and insect outbreaks—are increasing around the world. In forests that are affected by these disturbances, salvage logging is often conducted to compensate for economic losses and to aid in forest recovery. Although the negative impacts of salvage logging on biodiversity have been reported across many taxa, its effects on medium-sized mammals remain unknown. This includes raccoons, which are among the most invasive nonnative species in both Japan and Europe. To address this, we conducted a camera trap survey at sites with and without salvage logging following a landslide. Additionally, we investigated the environmental factors influencing medium-sized mammals. The results revealed that raccoon dogs preferred unsalvaged areas, whereas red foxes and raccoons used salvaged areas. Analyses of environmental factors revealed that red foxes and raccoons tended to prefer areas with low maximum vegetation heights, which are easier to traverse. This may indicate that they used landslide areas as corridors to nearby forests. Conversely, raccoon dogs may benefit from the microtopography created by sediments and logs, as they were more active in areas without salvage logging. For future forest management in landslide areas, it may be important to designate some areas where salvage logging is not conducted for raccoon dogs. Future research should address the limitations of this study and compare forests before and after salvage logging.
