Scientometric insights into the human settlement environment in the karst regions: trends, challenges, and future directions

The karst geomorphic region is an ecologically sensitive location of worldwide importance, and its human settlement environment faces several complicated difficulties, including ecological fragility and a clear conflict between man and land. Currently, the research state and possible trends of human settlements in karst environments have not been thoroughly examined. In this study, the CiteSpace scientific econometric analysis tool was used to completely sort out the research progress of human settlements in karst areas, as well as comprehend the existing conditions, research hotspots, and possible trends of human settlements in karst regions. The results show that: (1) since 2015, there has been a marked increase in publication volume, with “Environmental Sciences” and “Geosciences Multidisciplinary” dominating the discourse, representing 42.4% of the total publications; (2) rocky desertification, land use, and environmental impact are the hot areas of karst research; (3) the terms “framework”, “ecosystem services”, “climate change”, and “synergy” have emerged as keywords with potential research momentum in recent years. Future research on human settlements in karst locations will investigate the intricate interplay and impacts between human activities and karst environments using a systems framework approach. The focus is on using satellite remote sensing and big data to track environmental changes and evaluate the effects of related policies. This study provides a complete analysis of the scientific advancements in human settlements inside karst regions. The knowledge framework is a useful tool for academics to acquire fundamental information, while the possible research characteristics broaden scholars' understanding and provide new clues for future studies on human settlements in karst geomorphic environments.
