Multi-criteria-based hotspot analysis for prioritization of native woody species in sustainable biologic programs for arid lands

Since expert knowledge hotspots are primary drivers of prioritization in multi-criteria decision-making, their scrutiny can provide a more accurate assessment because of adapting to abrupt climate changes and urban development in future years. Hence, we sought to prioritize native woody species for sustainable biological projects using MCDM-ANP and hotspot analyses in the Gohar Park located in the vicinity of the Sirjan playa (Kafe-namak), Iran. Data were gathered based on the ANP procedure through expert view-based questionnaires and the hotspot analysis was then applied. The study’s results revealed that (1) the indices of the beauty of tree species and lower maintenance requirements had the most importance among the others with the coefficients reported to be 0.13 and 0.11, respectively. (2) Among the species considered, Amygdalus scoparia emerged as the top priority with 6 hotspots out of 18 (p < 0.01). Three other species—Pistacia atlantica, Ficus johannis, and Stocksia brahuica—were ranked second having 7 hotspots (p < 0.05). These findings underscore the significance of expert insights in multi-criteria prioritization, a strategic approach that focuses on the hotspot services or indices derived from sustainable plant species while also accounting for hidden relationships. Nonetheless, changes in the vegetative components of ecosystems due to stressors from climate change may limit the sustainability of the prioritization outcomes identified in this study.
