Creative dance combined with strength training improves functional agility under single and dual task conditions in women with fibromyalgia

Women with fibromyalgia exhibit impairments in gait, balance, and functional capacity, which are exacerbated under dual task conditions and may increase fall risk. Multicomponent interventions that integrate motor and cognitive demands may be particularly beneficial for this population.
ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to examine the effects of a six-week multicomponent program combining creative dance and strength training on physical fitness and gait agility under single and dual task conditions in women with fibromyalgia.
MethodsA cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted in women with fibromyalgia assigned to an exercise group (n = 17) or a control group (n = 16). The exercise group participated in two supervised sessions per week for six weeks, while the control group continued their usual activities. Mobility, strength, balance, and gait agility under single and dual task conditions were assessed using mixed linear models.
ResultsA significant group*time interaction was observed for the Timed Up and Go test, indicating greater improvements in functional agility in the exercise group under single task conditions. Under dual task conditions, significant group*time interactions were found in the stop-and-go phases of the Agility Challenge for the Elderly, reflecting improved gait agility during movement initiation and termination. No significant between group differences were observed for other strength or balance outcomes.
ConclusionA multicomponent intervention combining creative dance program and strength training may improve functional agility under single task conditions and gait performance under dual task conditions in women with fibromyalgia.
