Purpose <p>To validate the Turkish International Fitness Scale (IFIS) for young adults and test its gender invariance. To evaluate young adults’ fitness using both the IFIS and field-based tests and examine relationships among perceived fitness, objective fitness, physical activity, and self-rated health.</p> Methods <p>Eighty university students (mean age: 20.7&#xa0;years; 45 females) completed the IFIS, objective tests (20&#xa0;m shuttle-run, T-test, grip strength, flexibility evaluations), self-rated health, international physical activity questionnaire, and short form-36 (SF 36) questionnaires. Following a three-day test–retest interval, IFIS was completed by the participants again.</p> Results <p>The Turkish IFIS demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.77) and test–retest reliability (κ = 0.50–0.70) in young adults; preliminary support for gender invariance was observed. Total IFIS scores showed a positive correlation with self-rated health (<i>r</i> = 0.63, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.01) and were significantly associated with physical activity levels (<i>r</i> = 0.24, <i>p</i> = 0.03). Significant correlations of IFIS were also found with SF-36 subscales, including physical functioning (<i>r</i> = 0.25, <i>p</i> = 0.03), general health (<i>r</i> = 0.42, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), energy (<i>r</i> = 0.26, <i>p</i> = 0.02), and bodily pain (<i>r</i> = 0.23, <i>p</i> = 0.04). Objective fitness measures further validated these findings, as self-rated health correlated significantly with predicted VO2max (<i>r</i> = 0.41, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.001) and T-test agility performance (<i>r</i> = − 0.25, <i>p</i> = 0.02). Additionally, physical activity levels were significantly associated with VO2max (<i>r</i> = 0.30, <i>p</i> = 0.009), agility (<i>r</i> = 0.27, <i>p</i> = 0.01), and both dominant and non-dominant grip strength (<i>r</i> = 0.26, <i>p</i> = 0.02; <i>r</i> = 0.25, <i>p</i> = 0.03, respectively).</p> Conclusions <p>Both objective and perceived fitness levels associated with self-rated health. The Turkish IFIS is a valid, reliable, and gender-invariant low-cost screening instrument for assessing perceived fitness in university students. Low to moderate correlations of perceived physical fitness with objective field-based physical fitness tests represents that perceived and field-based physical fitness evaluations should not be used interchangeably.</p>

Methods

Results

Conclusions

Both objective and perceived fitness levels associated with self-rated health. The Turkish IFIS is a valid, reliable, and gender-invariant low-cost screening instrument for assessing perceived fitness in university students. Low to moderate correlations of perceived physical fitness with objective field-based physical fitness tests represents that perceived and field-based physical fitness evaluations should not be used interchangeably.
