A review of the role of physical activities in managing polycystic ovary syndrome symptoms
摘要
The aim of this narrative review is to provide a qualitative overview of the PCOS, and physical activity effects on symptom management and identify any gaps and contradictions in the literature regarding the treatment of PCOS through physical activity.
MethodsA literature search was conducted on the main scientific search engines: PubMed, and Google Scholar. The research was conducted by looking for articles where there was a correlation between physical activity and PCOS, and which physical activities were most suitable for minimizing the symptoms of the syndrome. The keywords used were therefore: polycystic ovary syndrome, physical activity, symptom management and treatment. The choice of articles fell only on articles in English, in a time frame ranging from the year 2000 to 2024.
ResultsAccording to the data found in literature, we have obtained data that correlate the different types of physical activity (Moderate-intensity aerobic, Continuous aerobic exercise training, High-intensity interval training and Moderate-intensity aerobic, combined with strength training) and their effects on subjects, affected by PCOS, with different body compositions (Overweight women with PCOS and Normal-weight women with PCOS) and that can provide basic indications on which physical activity protocols can be used.
ConclusionPolycystic ovary syndrome is a disorder that is not easy to manage. It can certainly be said that physical activity is a strong ally in therapy to improve its symptoms. However, further studies are needed to establish more precisely which aspects of physical activity provide the greatest benefit.
