<p>Algae are the most common aquatic organisms and a major source of primary organic food globally. Optimal nutrition is crucial for athletic performance, recovery, and endurance. Various nutrients and metabolites like carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in algae make it suitable for health-promoting supplements, nutraceutical formation, and treatment for a wide range of health conditions. This review explores the role of selected common edible microalgal species <i>Arthrospira platensis</i>, <i>Chlorella vulgaris</i>, <i>Dunaliella salina</i>, <i>Haematococcus pluvialis</i> and macroalgal species <i>Ulva rigida</i> and <i>Sargassum polycystum</i> in sports nutrition, highlighting their potential to be used as sports supplements, and it can work as an ergogenic aid and reduce fatigue, antioxidant, anticancer, enhancement in the nutritional value of food, immune system improvement, and disease prevention. Microalgae such as <i>Spirulina</i> and <i>Chlorella</i> are protein-rich and boost the endurance power of athletes, while <i>Dunaliella</i> and <i>Haematococcus</i> provide potent antioxidants like carotenoids and astaxanthin for recovery. Macroalgae <i>Ulva</i> and <i>Sargassum</i> provide polysaccharides and polyphenols that enhance metabolism and reduce inflammation. This review emphasizes the potential of edible algae as a healthy and sustainable dietary alternative for sports persons. Moreover, the supplements and bioactive molecules acquired from these algae have beneficial properties for athletes and increase their performance.</p> Graphical abstract
