Assessment of general, sports, and Pakistan-specific nutrition knowledge among recreational university athletes in Pakistan
摘要
Nutrition knowledge is the most significant component that leads to adopting healthy eating habits and a balanced dietary pattern, consequently improving health and athletic performance. Pakistan, a developing country, has many athletes who perform different sports and compete and win internationally, but their nutrition knowledge is a limiting factor that is not being evaluated. The purpose of this study was to assess the total nutrition knowledge (TNK), including general nutrition knowledge (GNK), sports nutrition knowledge (SNK), and Pakistan nutrition knowledge (PNK) among recreational university athletes of Pakistan. A cross-sectional study was conducted, and 200 participants were recruited. The data were collected using a validated questionnaire, i.e., The Abridged Nutrition for Sports Knowledge Questionnaire (ANSKQ). The Kruskal–Wallis test was used to compare mean scores. The statistical analyses were performed at a 95% probability level.
ResultsAmong 200 participants, 69% had a poor TNK score, 19.5% had average TNK, 8.5% had good TNK, and only 3% had excellent TNK. However, the mean SNK Score (49.0) was relatively higher than GNK (24.3) and PNK (18.9) (p = 0.487) but classified as poor. Based on gender, no difference was found in GNK. However, there is a slight difference in SNK, i.e., males (47.9%) vs. females (51.6%), PNK [males (18.8%) vs. females (19.2%)] and TNK, i.e., males (45.4%) vs. females (47.8%). Participants who had never consulted with a registered dietitian (RD) had better GNK (25.3), SNK (51), and TNK (47.7), as compared to participants who consulted only 1 time (TNK = 43.4), or more than 1 time (TNK = 45.8), whereas participants consulted with RD scored more for PNK (19.5).
ConclusionsResults concluded that there is a lack of knowledge of nutrition among recreational university athletes. However, among TNK, SNK scored more than GNK and PNK but was classified as poor.
