Purpose <p>Hamstring muscles play a very important role in day-to-day activities as well as in sports where frequent running is required. Tightness of these muscles can lead to limitation of motion thus compromising the desired performance outcome in sports. The present study was undertaken to analyze the effects of static stretching (SS), muscle energy technique (MET) and myofascial release (MFR) on hamstring muscle tightness and performance measures among football players and to compare between their effects.</p> Methods <p>57 football players with hamstring muscle tightness were included in the study. They were categorized into 3 groups (<i>n</i> = 19 each) that received MET, MFR and static stretching respectively. Each group received 3 sessions/week for 4&#xa0;weeks. Their knee flexion range, agility, speed, flexibility and vertical jump height were assessed at baseline and after 4&#xa0;weeks of intervention. Data were analyzed using paired and unpaired <i>t</i> test, One-way ANOVA and post hoc tests.</p> Results <p>The results indicated that MET, MFR and SS were equally effective in improving hamstring flexibility and performance measures. However, statistically significant differences were observed for speed between the groups, with the MFR group showing better results than the SS group.</p> Conclusion <p>It can be concluded that all three interventions can be used to reduce hamstring muscle tightness among football players.</p>

Effects of muscle energy technique versus myofascial release on hamstring tightness and performance measures in university football players

Purpose

Hamstring muscles play a very important role in day-to-day activities as well as in sports where frequent running is required. Tightness of these muscles can lead to limitation of motion thus compromising the desired performance outcome in sports. The present study was undertaken to analyze the effects of static stretching (SS), muscle energy technique (MET) and myofascial release (MFR) on hamstring muscle tightness and performance measures among football players and to compare between their effects.

Methods

57 football players with hamstring muscle tightness were included in the study. They were categorized into 3 groups (n = 19 each) that received MET, MFR and static stretching respectively. Each group received 3 sessions/week for 4 weeks. Their knee flexion range, agility, speed, flexibility and vertical jump height were assessed at baseline and after 4 weeks of intervention. Data were analyzed using paired and unpaired t test, One-way ANOVA and post hoc tests.

Results

The results indicated that MET, MFR and SS were equally effective in improving hamstring flexibility and performance measures. However, statistically significant differences were observed for speed between the groups, with the MFR group showing better results than the SS group.

Conclusion

It can be concluded that all three interventions can be used to reduce hamstring muscle tightness among football players.
