Analysis of time under tension, velocity, and muscular power output in different resistance training methods: a systematic review

This systematic review aimed to analyze the time under tension, velocity, and muscular power output in different resistance training methods.
MethodsThe systematic review was written in accordance with PRISMA recommendations and registered in PROSPERO under protocol number CRD42024509823. The inclusion criteria for the studies followed the PECOS strategy. The search was conducted in the MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science databases between May 11 and 12, 2025, by two independent and experienced researchers, without filters for language or publication date. Discrepancies were resolved by a third researcher. The search phrase used was “strength training” OR “resistance training” OR “power training” OR “weight training” OR plyometric OR ballistic OR “peak power” OR “power output” AND “time under tension” OR “movement tempo”. The JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist and ROBINS-E tools were used for the assessment of methodological quality and risk of bias, respectively.
ResultsThe number of participants in the studies ranged from 11 to 24, totaling 142 individuals, of whom 137 were men and 5 were women. Time under tension, velocity, and muscular power output were analyzed based on different resistance training methods found in the studies.
ConclusionThe different resistance training methods analyzed in the present study showed that increased muscular power output is associated with shorter time under tension and higher movement execution speed. However, in some methods, time under tension may increase due to the influence of variables such as fatigue, number of repetitions, and rest intervals.
