Purpose <p>This study aims to determine the relationship between the isometric strength of the quadriceps muscle and knee proprioception in men and women with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS).</p> Methods <p>Forty-five men (<i>n</i> = 22) and women (<i>n</i> = 23) aged 18 to 45&#xa0;years, suffering from PFPS, participated in this study. The isometric strength of the quadriceps muscles was evaluated using a hand-held dynamometer. Photogrammetry was used to assess proprioception of the knee joint in an open chain of motion at angles of 30 and 60 degrees. Pearson’s correlations were used to assess the relationship between muscle strength and knee joint proprioception.</p> Results <p>A significant positive correlation was found between proprioception at 30° and 60° flexion (<i>r</i> = 0.445, <i>p</i> = 0.038), and a non-significant negative trend between strength and proprioception at 60° (<i>r</i> = –0.412, <i>p</i> = 0.057). No significant correlations were observed in the female group.</p> Conclusion <p>The results suggest a potential relationship between quadriceps strength and knee proprioception in men with patellofemoral pain syndrome, but not in women. These findings highlight the importance of sex-specific approaches in assessment and rehabilitation strategies for PFPS.</p>

Purpose

This study aims to determine the relationship between the isometric strength of the quadriceps muscle and knee proprioception in men and women with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS).

Methods

Forty-five men (n = 22) and women (n = 23) aged 18 to 45 years, suffering from PFPS, participated in this study.
