Effects of Brazilian recreational dance on postexercise blood pressure in sedentary women with overweight or obesity: a within-subject study

We investigated the blood pressure dynamic after a single Brazilian recreational dance (BRD) intervention in women with overweight/obesity.
MethodsTwenty-one women [age = 24 (20, 27) years; body mass index = 31.6 (28.4, 34.5) kg/m2] underwent blood pressure measurement before and after a BRD intervention and control condition. The comparison between protocols was performed using the Wilcoxon test, and the one-sample Wilcoxon test was used to verify if the residual effects (RE) of dance intervention were different from zero.
ResultsGreater increase in systolic blood pressure (SBP) was observed immediately after the dance intervention (p < 0.05, ES = 0.66), without differences between dance and control conditions after 30 min of recovery (p > 0.05, ES = 0.21). Nevertheless, a more significant reduction of SBP was observed on BRD intervention after 60 min of recovery (p < 0.05, ES = 0.41). Positive values of systolic RE were observed immediately after BRD (p < 0.05, ES = 0.66). However, negative RE were observed after 30 (p < 0.05, ES = 0.33) and 60 min (p < 0.05, ES = 0.40) of recovery, indicating more pronounced hypotension after BRD intervention. No differences between conditions were observed for diastolic blood pressure (p > 0.05).
ConclusionsA single session of BRD, an effective and enjoyable approach, can lead to a reduction of around 10 mmHg in SBP 30–60 min after intervention in young women with overweight or obesity. Furthermore, the extent of PEH was greater in women with higher pre-exercise blood pressure levels and varies depending on the mathematical model used for PEH analysis.
