Antioxidant properties of capsaicin along with high-intensity resistance circuit training contribute to the redox and hematological adaptation during cold exposure stress: a double-blind randomized clinical trial

Chronic exposure to cold climate exerts deleterious effects on various aspects of performance through changes in redox status and hematological characteristics. It seems that benefiting from non-pharmacological supplements along with the implementation of resistance training exercises might lead to adjusting destructive situation. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate the effect of high-intensity resistance training along with capsaicin supplementation on serum hematological indicators, oxidative/anti-oxidant status, and military performance in cold climates.
MethodsA total number of 48 male military personnel (30–45 years old) were recruited for the study and randomly divided into 4 groups of 12 people, including: (1) High-Intensity Resistance Circuit Training (RT), (2) Capsaicin supplement (CS), (3) High-Intensity Resistance Circuit Training + Capsaicin supplement (RTCS), and (4) control (C). The training groups implemented High-Intensity Resistance Circuit Training three sessions per week for a total time of 8 weeks (50% to 85% 1RM) in cold weather conditions, and Supplement groups received 12 mg/day capsaicin capsules for 8 weeks. About 48 h after the final training session, blood samples were taken to measure 8-OHdG, MDA, hs-CRP, TOC, TAC, and hematological indices (WBC, RBC, HgB, and Platelets) using the ELISA technique. Data were analyzed using paired T-tests (between groups), ANOVA (within groups), and Bonferroni (post hoc test) at a significant level of P < 0.05.
ResultsAccording to the results of ANOVA, eight weeks of resistance training protocol and capsaicin supplementation modulated oxidative stress and inflammation and reduced the serum levels of 8-OHdG (P = 0.002), MDA (P = 0.001), hs-CRP (P = 0.006), TOC (P = 0.001) and upregulated TAC (P = 0.003), as well as attenuation of WBC (P = 0.02), RBC (P = 0.01), HgB (P = 0.002) and Platelets (P = 0.001) along with improvement of Bruce protocol (P = 0.001) and Sargent jump (P = 0.001) records. Furthermore, the main effects of resistance training along with capsaicin supplementation showed the greatest impact on modulating oxidative stress/inflammation and improving performance (P < 0.05).
ConclusionCapsaicin combined with resistance training showed promising effects in attenuation of oxidative stress/inflammatory responses and improving the performance of military personnel in operations in cold climates though further studies with larger samples are needed to confirm these findings.
