The relationship between Q angle, range of the ankle motion, and front crawl leg performance in elite male swimmers

This study aims to investigate the relationship between the Q angle, ankle range of motion, and front crawl leg performance in elite male swimmers.
MethodsFifty eight available elite male swimmers were selected with mean and SD of age 23.68 ± 2.28 years, weight 71.88 ± 9.35 kg, and height 176.11 ± 5.52 cm in this study. Initially, the Q angles of the right and left legs (in the supine position), as well as the range of dorsiflexion and plantar flexion, were measured using a goniometer. Their mean were calculated at the right and left leg Q angles. Then the test was recorded of the leg kick of front crawl swimming at a distance of 15 m from the pool. The number of the leg kick of front crawl counted by the use of three referees and Cinematography technique. Subsequently, the distance per front stroke kick was calculated using a mathematical formula.
ResultsThe results of the Pearson correlation coefficient showed a significant positive correlation between the Q angle and with time of the leg kick of front crawl (p ≤ 0.05, r = 0.49). There was significant negative correlation between the dorsal flexion and time of the leg kick of front crawl (p ≤ 0.01, r = −0.56) and between plantar flexion and time of the leg kick of front crawl (p ≤ 0.01, r = -0.71). There was a significant positive correlation between dorsal flexion and the distance per the leg kick of front crawl (p ≤ 0.01, r = 0.51) and between plantar flexion and the distance per the leg kick of front crawl (p ≤ 0.01, r = 0.64).
ConclusionThe results showed that the size of the Q angle (Q ≤ 13.23) and range of the ankle motion could be important in the success, talent identification, and selection of mentioned front crawl swimmers.
