Comparison of immediate effects of taping and exercise for thoracic spine on tissue temperature, neuromuscular performance, and balance on asymptomatic university students: a crossover study

The thoracic spine is crucial for spinal stability and force transmission but remains under-researched, with its neuromuscular response to interventions still unclear.
PurposeThis study aimed to investigate the immediate effects of posture correction exercises and Kinesio taping on tissue temperature, reaction time, endurance, and flexibility in asymptomatic young adults.
MethodFifteen asymptomatic university students (7 males, 8 females; age: 20.60 ± 1.18 years) underwent Kinesio taping and exercise interventions in a crossover design. Taping targeted scapular posture, while exercises focused on thoracic spine activation. Assessments before and 20 min after interventions included thermal imaging (tissue temperature), “Test You Brain Pro” (reaction time), Back Scratch Test (flexibility), Sorenson and Push-Up Tests (endurance), and Computerized Balance System (balance).
ResultsThe taping group exhibited a statistically significant improvement in non-dominant (p < 0.05) and bilateral (p < 0.001) upper extremity reaction time, Sorenson test (p < 0.05), and total score of stability limit (p < 0.05). Similarly, the exercise group also showed statistically significant changes in all reaction time parameters (p < 0.05), non-dominant side flexibility (p < 0.05), and eyes closed CoP-Y balance score (p < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences observed between the two groups in any of the parameters. Tissue temperature did not seem to vary significantly within or between groups (p > 0.05).
ConclusionBoth posture correction exercises and Kinesio taping have been found to have an immediate positive impact on neuromuscular performance and balance in asymptomatic young adults. It is suggested that further research can be conducted to explore the long-term effects and optimal implementation strategies of these interventions.
