Evaluation of physical activity level, handgrip strength, and flexibility in relation to nutritional status in children 6 to 12 years of age

Current lifestyle habits have led to a more sedentary way of life, contributing to the rise in childhood obesity. Consequently, individuals with excess body mass tend to exhibit lower levels of physical activity, muscle strength, and flexibility (FLEX), potentially resulting in musculoskeletal issues and motor development challenges. The aim of the present study was to verify the influence of physical activity (PAL), handgrip strength (HGS), and FLEX on nutritional status in children 6–12 years of age.
MethodsThis cross-sectional study used a convenience sampling method. Body composition, anthropometric measurements, skinfolds, HGS, FLEX, and PAL were evaluated. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 20.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Parametric and non-parametric statistical tests were performed after verifying data distribution. Differences with P ≤ 0.05 were considered to be statistically significant.
ResultsA total of 174 children were divided into 3 groups and evaluated: eutrophic (n = 110); obese (n = 34); and overweight (n = 30). Statistical differences in anthropometric measurements and HGS scores were observed among the groups, despite satisfactory levels of FLEX and PAL with no statistical differences.
ConclusionThe sample met international recommendations for PAL. An increase in HGS was observed with higher nutritional status. Anthropometry, age differences, and PAL may influence HGS. No significant differences were found in FLEX and PAL with regard to nutritional status.
