Translation and validation of the Persian version of the global sleep assessment questionnaire in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
摘要
This study aimed to translate and validate the Persian version of the Global Sleep Assessment Questionnaire (GSAQ) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to screen for sleep disorders.
MethodsAfter obtaining permission from the original developers, the English version of GSAQ was translated into Persian. Ten sleep medicine experts assessed the face and content validities of the Persian GSAQ. After that, 20 patients with COPD and different literacy and socioeconomic status were interviewed to evaluate face validity. For evaluation of internal consistency (by Cronbach’s alpha), reliability (by test-retest reproducibility after 2–4 weeks), and construct validity, 50 consecutive patients with COPD were enrolled in the study. Construct validity, using convergent and divergent validity, was evaluated by examining Pearson correlation coefficients between GSAQ scales, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Saint George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ).
ResultsGSAQ was successfully translated into Persian. The overall mean score of GSAQ was 9.36 ± 13.52. The internal consistency of the Persian GSAQ was acceptable (Cronbach α = 0.73), and the calculated intra-class-correlation (ICC) value was 0.82. The Pearson R coefficient was 0.72 between GSAQ and PSQI and 0.77 between GSAQ and SGRQ, implying a significant relationship (p < 0.001).
ConclusionThe Persian version of GSAQ is a valid and reliable questionnaire for screening sleep disorders in Persian-speaking individuals with COPD.
