Evaluating the effect of CCTV on case clearances in Fayetteville, NC: A case for entropy balancing

  • Amanda L. Thomas

摘要

Objectives

This study tests the impact of CCTV on case clearances, while also examining these effects across crime type and by phase of deployment.

Methods

Utilizing individual criminal incidents as the unit of analysis, this research used entropy balancing to establish a weighted control group that almost perfectly mirrored the treatment group across several theoretical and practical covariates. The effect of CCTV was then tested through several logistic regression models that employed the probability weights created through the entropy balancing process.

Results

Case clearances increased as much as 61% after CCTV was installed (OR = 1.615, p = 0.018). These results were primarily influenced by disorder crimes, with case clearances increasing by 160% in treatment areas when compared to controls (OR = 2.602, p = 0.001).

Conclusions

Continuing to rigorously evaluate the investigative utility of CCTV is paramount, given that CCTV may also help other agencies improve their clearance rate.
