Objectives <p>To experimentally evaluate the effects of police vehicle designs on public detection of police vehicle presence.</p> Methods <p>As part of the experimental paradigm, participants were asked to indicate if police vehicles were present in randomly assigned images under the guise of a visual detection study. Whereas some participants observed images with marked police vehicles (either with a black and white or all-white color scheme), other participants observed images with unmarked police vehicles.</p> Results <p>Participants were much better at detecting the presence of police vehicles when such vehicles were explicitly marked as police vehicles than when they were unmarked, with some nuance by color scheme within the marked vehicle category.</p> Conclusions <p>Police vehicles are instrumental in contemporary policing. Police vehicle designs impact the visual detection of police vehicles. Police agencies hoping to amplify public sightings of their personnel should be considerate of the designs of their police vehicles.</p>

Objectives
