Study and Analysis of a Single Sided Antipodal Vivaldi Antenna Performance in Microwave Imaging for Breast Tumor Detection

In this paper we have tried to achieve simulation of a Vivaldi antenna design which is applied in the study of microwave imaging applications. The current breast tumor detection techniques suffer from high false rate, high cost, and inefficiency in early detection. These shortcomings is addressed in this research by implementing microwave imaging by the usage of an antenna system. Due to the planar structure of Vivaldi antenna it exhibits attractive geometrical characteristics, variations in size, shape, properties and functioning, their final radiation pattern also shows variation which affects their final output. There is a major research interest growing in the study of Vivaldi antenna achieved in this work, which is due to the multiple permutations and combinations possible in its design. The operating frequency of the antenna is from 32 GHz to 38 GHz frequency range. This article demonstrated the effectiveness of this design in microwave imaging for breast tumor detection. Radiation efficiency of 80% was achieved. The scattering parameters change when there is a breast tumor developed in the breast tissue which clearly distinguishes between a healthy person and persons who have developed breast tumor. The VSWR obtained is 1.1 which shows the effectiveness of this design. The Scattering parameters were simulated and studied, The antenna proved to be a good candidate for breast tumor detection especially in early detection.
