One Port SIW Based 10 GHz Leaky Wave Antenna for Contactless Respiration Monitoring

Respiratory activity failure is unpredictable and life threating event, so real time monitoring of patient’s respiratory activity is important. Typical body mount sensors are susceptible to contamination by contagious diseases. These sensors also create uneasiness to the patient especially to newborn or burned people. Contactless based real time respiration monitoring approaches are preferred over typical body mount approaches. This paper describes the work that was done to create a contactless respiration monitoring system using a leaky wave antenna and SIW. Making linear slots is the method used for modeling and fabricating the SIW Leaky wave antenna. In order to analyze factors such as the proposed antenna’s radiation efficiency, VSWR, 2D far field pattern, and s-parameters, a frequency range spanning from 7 to 11 GHz is applied as input. The findings indicate that the antenna is directional and can be directed toward the patient’s bed for detection. The antenna’s radiation efficiency is 96%, with a directional pattern of 9.72 and 3 dB angular breadth of 37.5°. This paper also describes a real-time respiration monitoring system that works with a VNA (Keysight-P9374A) and fabricated antenna.The system was tested on a group of five volunteers, including both male and female participants aged between 32 and 43 years. The tests were conducted at distances of 1, 1.5, and 2 m, yielding results that showed a 93.91% confidence interval accuracy. On average, 6.09% errors were observed specifically at a distance of 1 m.
