<p>Patients with local infections caused by non-typhoidal <i>Salmonella</i> often have a history of malignant tumors, immunosuppressive therapy, HIV, etc. We describe a rare case of cholecystitis with liver abscess caused by heterogeneous mucoid <i>Salmonella</i> Enteritidis in a diabetic patient. Mucoid and non-mucoid <i>Salmonella</i> Enteritidis were isolated from the patient after the initial surgery and upon recurrence, respectively. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) identified both isolates as sequence type ST11. We analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of biochemical reactions, serum agglutination tests, and MLST for identifying mucoid <i>Salmonella</i>. This report also reviews cases of mucoid <i>Salmonella</i> and discusses the potential effect of hyperglycemia on mucus formation in <i>Salmonella</i>.</p>
