Mycelium-based products: multifunctional flexible mycomaterial, a textile alternative produced from fungi and lignocellulose waste

Flexible materials such as leather are extremely versatile and have numerous applications. However, the environmental impact caused by livestock and the change in the population’s behavior in consuming smaller amounts of animal products propel the development of new materials. Fungi are important tools for the development of flexible mycomaterials. In this context, flexible mycomaterial production processes were developed, using Pleurotus albidus and Lentinus velutinus mycelium and lignocellulose waste. The mycomaterial presented promising mechanical properties as a substitute for leather, especially well-suited for accessories, including handbags and wallets; however, its tensile and tear strength was 50% smaller than that of leather. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polylactic acid (PLA) was suitable as a coating, imparting luster to the mycomaterial and increasing its mechanical resistance. L. velutinus presented higher tensile and tear strength. The mycomaterial made from L. velutinus with a PVA polymeric coating showed higher thermal stability compared to the other samples, and the polymeric coating conferred greater thermal stability.
