<p>North African wetlands face mounting pressures from land-use and land-cover (LULC) changes, climatic variability, and biological invasions. This study employs multi-temporal remote sensing data (1984–2020) to assess LULC dynamics in two Ramsar-designated sites in Algeria, Lake Oubeïra and Lake Tonga, within a 5 km buffer zone. The findings reveal a 1800% surge in urban development and a 27.2% reduction in open water at Lake Tonga, while Lake Oubeïra witnessed a 459.5% increase in urban areas and a 106.8% expansion of agricultural land, accompanied by a 36.7% reduction in forest cover. Despite their protected status, both wetlands exhibit degradation patterns consistent with regional trends, highlighting insufficient enforcement of conservation policies. These results underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions, including buffer zone regulation and invasive species management, to align governance practices with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and Sustainable Development Goal 15 (Life on Land). Future research should integrate socio-economic drivers of LULC changes to inform equitable conservation strategies.</p>
