Diversity and phenology of robber flies (Diptera: Asilidae) in coastal forests of the eastern Brazilian Amazon

Robber flies (Diptera: Asilidae) are widely distributed and diverse across various terrestrial ecosystems; however, their diversity in coastal environments, such as mangroves and floodplain forests, remains poorly known and rarely assessed. In this study, we present the first species list of asilids recorded in mangrove and floodplain forests along the eastern coast of the fluviomarine Marajó Island, state of Pará, Brazil. In total, 41 specimens were collected, representing three subfamilies, five genera, four nominal species, and two morphospecies. Mangroves recorded a higher abundance of individuals (n = 21; 51.2%), although this was not significantly different from that observed in the floodplains. In terms of richness, the most speciose genus was Blepharepium (n = 2 species; 33.3% of the total species collected), while richness at the species level, both habitats presented similar values, both for total richness (n = 5) and exclusive richness (n = 1). Mallophora rufiventris Macquart was the most abundant species, with 16 individuals, collected mainly in mangroves (n = 15; 71.4%), this finding represents a new record for the northern region of Brazil and the state of Pará. On the other hand, the floodplains presented a pattern of co-dominance between Triorla paraensis (n = 8; 40%) and Blepharepium fuscipennis Rondani (n = 5; 25%). Based on our results, we highlight that mangroves and floodplains play an important role in maintaining assassin fly diversity within coastal landscapes of the eastern Amazon.
