Assessment of wetland shrinkage using Wetland Shrinkage Monitoring (WSM) model: a comparative study between Panishala and Rasik Beel, Cooch Behar, West Bengal

Wetlands are incredibly valuable for their biodiversity and the various benefits they provide to people. Unfortunately, their health is in severe decline worldwide, jeopardising both environmental integrity and human well-being. The study presents a comparative assessment of wetland shrinkage using a GIS-based model in the Panishala and Rasik Beel wetlands, located in the Cooch Behar District of West Bengal. The two wetland areas differ significantly in their environmental characteristics: Rasik Beel is a forest area, while Panishala is a wetland associated with a village. To investigate the spatio-temporal changes and causes of degradation in Panishala and Rasik Beel wetlands, the first step involved quantifying modifications in land use and land cover. Thus, a Wetland Shrinkage Monitoring (WSM) tool is utilised to assess and analyse the importance of various driving factors. The results indicate that wetland shrinkage in the study area has primarily been influenced by encroachment and infrastructural development. Change detection analyses reveal that from 2003 to 2023, the surface area of Panishala wetland decreased by 53.57% (0.31 sq. km), while Rasik Beel experienced a reduction of 35.59% (0.36 sq. km). However, the wetland transition for 2033 and 2043 suggests that approximately 53.95% (0.14 sq. km) of the 0.27 sq. km wetland area in Panishala and 46.88% (0.30 sq. km) of the 0.65 sq. km area in Rasik Beel are at critical risk of transitioning to a different classification by 2043, based on Markov Transition predictions. The study highlights the importance of implementing a well-planned land-use system to mitigate the degradation of wetlands.
