Occurrence of Phthalates in a Large Shallow Lake and its Potential Risk Assessment

Given the widespread occurrences and potential ecotoxicity of phthalates (PAEs), it is essential to comprehend their distribution in surface water, especially in aquacultural lakes, and the associated ecological risks of PAEs in water. This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of the occurrence, spatial distribution, and potential ecological and health risk assessment of PAEs in the surface water of Chagan Lake. This lake serves not only as a commercial aquaculture site but also bears ecological significance, as it is located adjacent to agricultural areas in China. The targeted PAEs were 17, and except dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP), 16 PAEs were widely detected in the surface water of Chagan Lake. The predominant PAE congeners in Chagan Lake, in descending order, were DBP, DEHP, DIBP, DMP, and BBP. These sources might include agricultural irrigation drainage, sewage effluent, surface runoff, and so on. ∑17PAEs displayed the higher value on the north shore of the lake, with the maximum concentrations occurring near the channel entrance. These observations of the spatial distribution of PAEs indicated that agricultural drainage waters are a significant pathway for input PAEs into Chagan Lake. The ecological risk assessment indicates that DEHP, DBP, and DIBP all pose a substantial risk to vulnerable aquatic organisms. However, the health risk assessment suggests that PAEs exposure in Chagan Lake's water does not present a carcinogenic risk to humans. The results of this study provided important information needed for establishing and implementing effective practices for the regulation and priority control of PAE pollution in lakes.
