Ripples of Crisis: Unveiling the Health Impacts of Water Pollution in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has been blessed with vast water resources, characterized by an extensive river network spanning all districts of the nation, still the alarming level of contamination has afflicted a substantial portion of these resources, resulting in a persistent threat to public health. The pollution extends to both surface and groundwater sources, which are incessantly tainted by an array of harmful pollutants, encompassing toxic trace metals, pathogens, coliforms, inorganic compounds, and organic contaminants. The harmful agents responsible for the contamination of these surface and groundwater reservoirs engender an elevated spectrum of health risks associated with the utilization of tainted water resources. The prevalence of waterborne diseases and subsequent fatalities within the country is distressingly significant, with a particularly pronounced impact on women and children, who bear the brunt of these adverse consequences. Anthropogenic factors, including untreated industrial effluent discharge, chemical runoff from agricultural fields and from urban centers, improper sewage treatment and wastewater disposal, improper household waste disposal, heavy metals and chemicals from mining activities, deforestation, and land use changes are triggering the surface and groundwater pollution, and enhancing public health risks. This study undertakes a comprehensive examination of a diverse range of scholarly work, focusing on the complex issue of water pollution in Bangladesh and its impact on human health. This paper encapsulates a substantial body of scholarly work that collectively contributes to a nuanced understanding of the prevailing water pollution landscape within Bangladesh. Additionally, it underscores the profound implications of this issue on the realm of public health within the nation. Considering both factors and public health implications, this paper formulates advanced policy suggestions to help policymakers make informed policies and implement targeted interventions that can reduce water pollution and ensure a sustainable future.
