The Effect of Co-Substrates is Greater than that of Dye Structures on Decolorization and Degradation of Dyes: Comparative Study Confirmed

This study investigated the decolorization and degradation of five structurally diverse dyes by the mixed bacterial flora DDMZ1 under four different co-substrates, focusing on efficiency and underlying mechanisms. The differences in decolorization performance and microbiological mechanisms were investigated using liquid chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-TOF–MS) and Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The decolorization results showed that the addition of co-substrates enhanced decolorization, with the best results observed under yeast extract + fructose (YE + FRU). After 24 h, the decolorization rates of the azo dyes AO7 and RB5 reached 97.05% and 92.45%, respectively, showing an increase of 7% and 50%, compared to fructose (FRU) condition. After 72 h, the decolorization rate of the tri-azo dye CBE reached 95.21%, representing an enhancement of approximately 55% compared to FRU and about 15% compared to yeast extract (YE) condition. Illumina MiSeq sequencing showed that co-substrates exerted a greater impact on bacterial community structures than dye structure. Furthermore, to assess the toxicity of wastewater, toxicity evaluations were conducted on dyes with different structures and their degradation products.
