<p>We investigated two species of bithyniid snails, <i>Gabbia kiusiuensis</i> and <i>Parafossarulus manchouricus japonicus</i>, in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, between 2021 and 2024, to evaluate their infections with cercariae of trematodes. A type of parapleurolophocercous cercariae was detected in <i>G. kiusiuensis</i> from a locality near Lake Biwa. 28S rDNA and <i>cox1</i> sequence analyses revealed that these cercariae probably belong to the genus <i>Opisthorchis</i> Blanchard, 1895. This is the first record of this genus in snails in Japan. Species of <i>Opisthorchis</i> can be pathogenic to mammals and birds, but the actual pathogenicity of the present species remains unknown. The recent spread of <i>G. kiusiuensis</i> in Japan could lead to cases of liver fluke infections.</p>
