<p>This study analyzed Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) transformations in three urban wetlands within Colombo District, Sri Lanka—Thalangama Environmental Protection Area, Bellanwila-Attidiya Wetland, and Boralesgamuwa Lake—over two decades (2001–2021). Multi-temporal Landsat imagery and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques were used to classify major land cover types and detect spatial–temporal changes. The results reveal a consistent trend of reduced vegetation and paddy fields, accompanied by increased built-up and open areas. At Boralesgamuwa Lake, hydrological modifications also expanded open water. These patterns highlight the combined influence of urban growth, agricultural decline, and engineered interventions on wetland landscapes. By comparing three ecologically important sites within the same metropolitan region, the study demonstrates how local drivers—such as protection status, land-use history, and infrastructure projects—produce different transformation pathways. The findings emphasize the need for stricter land-use regulations, buffer zone protection, and community-based conservation strategies to safeguard wetland ecosystem functions while balancing urban development.</p>
