<p>While the ecosystem functions of urban main roadside plantation (MR) are well-documented however, significant knowledge gap for sub roadside plantation (SR) limits our understanding. Using both purposive and random sampling methods, we investigated species richness, diversity, above-below ground and total biomass carbon storage (AGC, BGC and TC) of MR and SR plantations in both northern and southern parts of Dhaka city. We found that species richness is higher in MR than SR in Dhaka north (MR: 4.70 ± 0.24, SR: 3.51 ± 0.14), south (MR: 4.45 ± 0.24, SR: 4.20 ± 0.32) and north + south (MR: 4.55 ± 0.17, SR: 3.85 ± 0.18) city respectively. MR of Dhaka north city showed higher mean AGC storage than SR (MR: 63.78 ± 11.33 Mg ha<sup>−1</sup>, SR: 40.16 ± 5.03 Mg ha<sup>−1</sup>) although the result is opposite for Dhaka south city (MR: 80.99 ± 11.08 Mg ha<sup>−1</sup>, SR: 103.58 ± 14.18 Mg ha<sup>−1</sup>). When combined north + south together, AGC was found higher in MR (73.62 ± 7.99 Mg ha<sup>−1</sup>) than SR (71.87 ± 8.39 Mg ha<sup>−1</sup>) following the similar trend for BGC and total carbon (TC). Species richness, DBH, basal area and crown area significantly increase (all, <i>P &lt;</i> 0.05) AGC, BGC and TC mostly in MR with few exceptions in case of SR, however, species diversity was found higher in SR. Our study suggested that SR are contributing less ecosystem functions than MR in both northern and southern parts of Dhaka city therefore, enhancing SR plantation is strongly recommended to maintain balanced ecosystem functions.</p>
