Greening the concrete: socio-economic patterns of wild plant utilization in rapidly urbanizing biodiversity hotspots

Rapid urbanization in biodiversity hotspots is reshaping human-plant relationships, yet the socio-economic dynamics of wild plant use in urban environments remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we examined socio-economic patterns of wild plant utilization in a metropolitan area within a Chilean biodiversity hotspot. Through 1000 semi-structured interviews, we investigated the influence of socio-economic factors on wild plant use, identified user profiles, and analyzed knowledge transmission pathways. We found that age, rural connection, and occupation are primary determinants of wild plant use in urban contexts. Five distinct user profiles emerged, revealing the heterogeneous nature of urban foraging practices. Furthermore, a significant discrepancy between reported plant knowledge and reported use was observed, influenced by social, personal, and environmental factors. Community-based knowledge sources remain crucial in urban settings, while media-based sources play a complementary role. These findings challenge simplistic narratives of knowledge erosion in cities, pointing to a complex reconfiguration of plant-human relationships.
