Faunal homogenization in tropical cities: lessons from anuran assemblages of two small Amazonian municipalities

Urbanization is an important cause of biotic homogenization around the world. However, the relationship between fauna homogenization and urbanization has yet to be properly investigated in cities located in species-rich tropical regions. Here we investigated taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional homogenization on anuran assemblages of urban and rural habitats in Tabatinga and Itacoatiara, two small municipalities located in Brazilian Amazon. These municipalities are located in different bioregions and the distribution of major habitats in the landscapes is also distinct among them. The anuran species richness was similar in the urban habitats of the two municipalities, but lower than in neighboring rural habitats. The composition of anuran species in urban habitats was highly dissimilar between the two municipalities. Species with widespread distribution contribute to the differentiation of local anuran assemblages in Itacoatiara while in Tabatinga those species contribute to homogenizing the anuran assemblages. Taxonomic distinction (a proxy for phylogenetic diversity) was not different between urban and rural habitats, and also it was similar between the urban habitats of the two cities. Some functional traits were equally filtered by urbanization in the two municipalities. Functional dispersion in anuran assemblages in urban habitats was smaller than that of rural assemblages in Itacoatiara, but not in Tabatinga. Our results suggest that some level of taxonomic and functional homogenization occurs in anuran assemblages in the urban habitats of the studied municipalities. However, the anuran assemblages in the urban habitats still represent the biogeographic regions where the studied cities are located. An integrative homogenization framework should be applied in other urban contexts to better understand the effects of urbanization on biodiversity in the tropical regions.
