Substitution of concentrate mixture with graded levels of Chibha (Ficus thonningii) leaf meal: effects on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, and body weight change in lambs

The availability and price of conventional concentrate feeds are among the major limiting factors for sheep fattening improvement. Evaluating the substitution effect of a concentrate mixture of noug seed cake and maize bran with Chibha (Ficus thonningii) dried leaf meal on feed intake, digestibility and body weight gain of lamb. Natural pasture hay was utilized as a basal diet. Twenty lambs with an average initial body weight of 15.1 ± 0.75 kg was assigned to four dietary treatments in a complete randomized block design. The dietary treatments were T1 (100% concentrate mixture), T2 (75% concentrate mixture + 25% Chibha dried leaves meal), T3 (50% concentrate mixture + 50% Chibha dried leaves meal, and T4 (25% concentrate mixture + 75% Chibha dried leaves meal) and the amount of each was fixed at the rate of 300 g/head/day on dry matter basis. The present study’s total dry matter and nutrient intakes showed highly significant differences (p < 0.001) among treatment groups. The total apparent digestibility of nutrients in the present study showed a highly significant difference (p < 0.001) among all treatment groups in the order of T1 > T2 > T3 > T4. The mean value of initial body weight was not significantly different (p > 0.05) among all treatment groups. In the present study, the final body weight and feed conversion efficiency showed highly significant (p < 0.001) differences among the treatments in the order of T1 > T2 > T3 = T4. The partial budget analysis showed that supplementation T1 was economically feasible. From biological and economic point of view T1 exhibited a higher response than other treatment groups.
