Comparative study on effect of Pleurotus florida treated and untreated wheat straw on feed intake, digestibility, and growth rate in cattle calves

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of fungal (Pleurotus florida) treated versus untreated wheat straw on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, and weight gain in Holstein Friesian and Jersey crossbred calves. A total of 32 calves (10 to 12 months of age, body weight 120 ± 3.30 kg) were assigned to eight groups according to randomized complete block design, and balanced for body weight, age and sex. The experimental diets included untreated wheat straw at 20% (UTWS20), fungal-treated (P. florida) wheat straw at 20% (FTWS20), untreated wheat straw at 40% (UTWS40), fungal-treated wheat straw at 40% (FTWS40), untreated wheat straw at 60% (UTWS60), fungal-treated wheat straw at 60% (FTWS60), untreated wheat straw at 80% (UTWS80), and fungal-treated wheat straw at 80% (FTWS80) of the forage fraction. The results demonstrated a significant increase (P < 0.05) in nutrient intake, nutrient digestibility, and acid detergent lignin digestibility in the groups fed with fungal-treated diets compared to the control groups. Additionally, calves receiving fungal-treated diets exhibited a significant improvement (P < 0.05) in growth performance, with an increase in body weight gain (BWG) ranging from 60.21 to 110.93 kg and daily weight gain from 0.28 to 1.23 kg/day. In conclusion, the incorporation of fungal-treated wheat straw into the basal diet of berseem hay enhanced overall performance in dairy calves, including improved nutrient intake, digestibility, BWG, and feed efficiency, without any adverse effects.
